How do we evaluate? – with Explain Everything!

Completing an evaluation of some kind at the end of a Design Technology project is good practice but is it really possible to do justice to a moving model on a side of A4? Explain Everything has provided us with a platform to share success, show process and comment on future improvement.

This year I decided to move away from the traditional evaluation sheet at the end of our Design Technology project on Carousels and opted instead to use Explain Everything to enable the children comment on their models. With a task sheet in hand giving them pointers on the areas required by the evaluation, they scattered around the classroom, cloakroom and corridors with their carousels to take pictures and capture some video. Once these were imported into Explain Everything, the children were able to record descriptions as to how they made their carousels using close ups to indicate the different elements, play videos of the carousel in action whilst commenting on how well it worked and using arrows to point out areas for improvement.

A different sort of evaluation, yes, but one which really got them thinking and learning – far more than a side of A4!
