In their French learning, Years 1 and 2 have been learning about food and drink in order to make cross curricular links with their termly topic Food Glorious Food.

In Year 1, we have looked at how to order food and drink in a café. Our learning has been vocabulary based and included a few key sentences such as "Bonjour Madame, j'ai faim/j'ai soif, je voudrais une glace Merci Madame/Monsieur". This enables children to take part in simple conversations that could be useful on a visit to France. The children enjoyed role playing these scenes and acting them out in an imaginary French café. The video above shows the children in role.

The Year 2s have focused on vocabulary describing their favourite food or drink. Much of the French learning in Year Two has been initiated by the children themselves as they want to develop their language learning linked to their topic. The children worked out which words they wanted to learn in French, often their favourite food, and then put the new words into sentences using opinions. Everyone had a go at producing sentences in writing first before incorporating their work independently into an iMovie or Puppet Pals video footage using the iPads. A movie was then made to put all the clips together. The video above shows a sample of their efforts.

This has been a great opportunity for KS1 children to develop oral and written language skills, practise speaking and listening, link to topic work and maximise their learning using the iPads. Bravo les enfants!
