Senior Maths Challenge success for 6th Form students

Published on 11/12/17

Second place at Senior Team Maths Challenge regional final for Stephen Perse 6th Form students.

On Tuesday 5 December, 6th Form students Ellen, Valery, Ella and Steve competed in the regional final of the Senior Team Maths Challenge (STMC). The STMC tests mathematical, communication and teamwork skills, and students compete against teams from other schools and colleges from their region.

The students worked together as a team of four through three different rounds:

  1. a group round where they all work on the same 10 questions
  2. a crossword round where they had to work on different parts as pairs
  3. a relay where they worked as pairs and passed their answers between them

The scores for these three rounds were subsequently added up to provide an overall score. It was very fast-paced and an exhilarating experience for all concerned! Ellen exclaimed that it "helped me to be a better team member as it was so important to be able to work well with others. It was really fun as well as lots of pressure".

It was an extremely hard fought contest and the team came in an impressive second out of 27 teams.

Excitingly this achievement has earn them a spot in the National Final of the STMC, which will be held at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London on 6 February 2018. We look forward to finding out soon, and to following the further successes of our young mathematicians!
