Year 10 students challenged to program Amazon's Alexa at Cambridge Development Centre

Published on 27/11/18

Eight Year 10 students from the Stephen Perse Senior School spent the day at the Amazon Development Centre in Cambridge.

Eight students from Year 10 were lucky enough to get the opportunity to visit the Amazon Development Centre in Cambridge on Tuesday 27 November. They were the winners of a competition where they had to design a new way to use drones, and came up with some new and innovative ideas, some of which can be seen here.

During the day, the students were tasked with programming Alexa, Amazon’s smart assistant product, as this is one of the areas the Cambridge Development Centre focuses on. Our students worked with students from other local schools to devise a new ‘skill’ for Alexa. Teams came up with creative ideas including cooking recipes, gift ideas and even a random Trump tweet generator. There was also some time for other activities though, including a go on the office table football.

The activity and the day was part of the Launch Pad scheme which was created in Cambridge to encourage local students into STEM careers and was organised by From the Future. It certainly inspired our students!
